The written word has always been mankind's most powerful way of getting a message across. Even on television shows the written word is the means to get a message across. There is hardly a show that is not scripted and either read from or memorized from someone's writing. When the internet came along it once again made the written word more powerful and this is why I write today, in hopes that many will read this and perhaps reconsider some of their choices.

Although the internet once again empowered the written word, it did so at a great cost to many other things, most notably music. Illegal file sharing and person to person downloading programs together completely destroyed the music industry. Not only did sales decline and bands and labels lose money, but thousands of bands also lost their means of surviving. When you illegally download a song, you are not only stealing from a faceless record label, but also from hardworking people who break their backs to create something beautiful for you to enjoy.

These people are creating music for you to enjoy and you are STEALING from them, stealing from their families, and basically taking food out of their mouths, clothes off their backs, and tearing roofs off of their heads. If you have ever illegally downloaded a song you are not a fan, you are nothing more than a petty thief. It's because of you that bands are being destroyed and being dropped from labels left and right.

It's not the band's fault that their albums have declined in quality, it's your own for discouraging them by stealing their music. Why would they work to create something amazing if they know people are simply going to steal it from them? That's why bands break up and are never heard from again. That's why band's create subpar albums when we know they can do much better. That's why there are less and less new bands coming out every year. Labels don't want to take chances on new bands when they're losing so much money to theft of their current bands' music.

When your favorite band gets dropped by their record label and breaks up, you have no one to blame but yourself if you illegally download music. In the end it's always stealing. You are no better than someone who puts on a mask and robs a bank. The only difference is you're sitting cowardly behind a computer and enjoying watching the music industry crumble at your feet.

If people do not stop illegally downloading music and start purchasing their CDs like us honest people do, than I'm afraid the music industry may not survive much longer. Encourage people to buy more CDs and to stop stealing music so our favorite band won't become the next casualty of the dying music industry.
